An exhibition by sibling artists Troy and Kelly Viss
Turlock City Gallery, 156 S. Broadway, Turlock CA;)
Presenting works made independently, along with the artists’ first collection produced collaboratively under the persona Lynn Gordon.
In this joint effort, Kelly [ Lynn ] and Troy [ Gordon ] Viss challenge the notion of the artist as loner, an individual toiling in solitude—replacing it with a vision for creative partnership and community. The work produced is unique in its origin and sensibility. Sibling artistic precedents of note include Augustus John and Gwen John who also worked independently, and more recently the Chapman brothers and the Starn twins who make artworks collaboratively.
The collaborative paintings in this exhibition are inspired by local culture and history, with the artists’ appreciation for the community that has played a significant part in shaping their personal and professional lives. As Jackson Pollock said, “Every good painter paints what he is.”

These paintings are a good example of my fascination with the epic in landscape painting. It is a quality that I admire in the work of the 19th Century painter Corot as well as the contemporary painter Howard Hodgkins. These pieces attempt to capture the stillness and beauty of the pastoral scene. In my work, this is accomplished through the layering of paint; thinned and varnished, scumbled and dripped. It is an involved process. The balance between the activity of the application and the coherence of the surface is delicate but I think contributes to the depth and mystery of the pieces. The images are concrete, but should disintegrate as the viewer approaches, revealing the abstract soul within. —Kelly Viss

It was inspiring to be in a different part of the country and find such warmth and grace. The opening was well attended, very nice, quite enthusiastic. Margaret Goldsmith of smithparada throws a lovely party and is the picture of hospitality. We found the local sights amazingly elegant and ourselves less jaded than we imagined. Amazing what crisp air and a reminder of the amazing freedom we have because those individuals laid hold of the vision and didn’t let go. Thank the Lord, Hallelujah. . that’s worth building several memorials to.

We shipped this show last week, now we’re off to D.C. for some good clean fun.
Artist’s reception is October 20, the exhibition will continue through the end of the month.

Affaire : May 2006Thanks to those of you who braved the elements and visited us at the Affaire in the Gardens (May 21-23). We had unseasonable rain on Sunday, but it’s always a great show and one of the best venues for connecting with friends, old and new.
